About us

Southwinds - Local News for Southern Sailors - is the Florida-based sailing magazine which covers racing, cruising, and gunkholing throughout the Gulf of Mexico and inland lakes from Texas and Oklahoma through Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. We offer the most comprehensive current coverage of sailing and travel in Cuba, plus monthly features from the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. As our covers state: For sailors - free...It's Priceless!
With more than 50,000 readers monthly, Southwinds has readers in more than 40 states and the tropics, including the Bahamas, Cuba, the Virgin Islands, and the western Caribbean.
The Boats 'n Stuff classified ads reach the active boating community and our brokerage ads list hundreds of new and used boats for sale. Southwinds is the first sailing magazine in the U.S. to hit the streets with full coverage and action color photos of Key West Race Week, SORC, the NOOD series, plus PHRF, MORC, and one-design regattas across the south. We cover a broad range of sailboats from Optimist dinghies and shoal-draft cruisers to maxi-yachts and bluewater passagemakers.
Among the nationally recognized writers who regularly contribute to Southwinds Magazine are cruising guide author Claiborne Young, multihull specialist Charles Kanter, and humorist Morgan Stinemetz. We also feature Jim Johnston's excellent ham radio columns, book reviews by Amy Smith Linton, and editor Doran Cushing's point-blank, no-holds-barred editorials on issues vital to the marine community.
